LEITE DE PEDRA

(Milking Stone)

Performative Installation / May 2023 / Canteiro - São Paulo

During the opening of the LEITE DE PEDRA exhibition, eight mothers, isolated in the attic of the space, were pumping milk. The milk traveled from the breast pumps to a machine that made it cross the gallery walls, reaching eight glass bottles suspended from the ceiling in a corridor where the audience was located. The sound around the installation was the amplified suction of the breastfeeding machines. At the end of the corridor, a small monitor displayed a barely visible live recording from a security camera that captured the women's performance in the attic. The performance lasted for eight hours, divided into one-hour shifts with two women on each shift.

This work is about the invisible and undervalued labor - particularly domestic and reproductive work - that is necessary to erect buildings and keep the wheel of Neoliberal Capitalism going.
